SPECIAL EVENTS 6 REGISTER ONLINE: classweb.townofcary.org PART ONE Indian Culture Learning Series (age 14 & up) In the weeks leading up to Cary Diwali on October 13, Hum Sub, Inc. will offer a series of cultural learning workshops for the community. Each focuses on a different aspect of life in India. All workshops are free, but pre-registration is required. All programs take place at the Page-Walker Arts & History Center unless noted. SPICES OF INDIA Surrender your senses to the rare and exotic spices of India. Learn how India's unique geography has shaped her regional cuisine and the role spices play in it. This is the land where spices are as much about nourishing the spirit as adding taste to the food. 115166 Mon Sep 17 6–8 p.m. TEXTILES OF INDIA Indian textiles have a long and illustrious history. Indian silks and muslins were once the talk of the world. Peek into the mesmerizing world of handwoven textiles that continue to thrive in a niche market. 115167 Mon Sep 24 6–8 p.m. FAITHS OF INDIA India's culture is a syncretic culture—one that has both borrowed and lent to other cultures. While predominantly Hindu, India is home to several other faiths such as Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism. 115168 Mon Oct 1 6–8 p.m. MITHILA PAINTINGS Some of the best-known Indian folk paintings are the Mithila paintings from the Madhubani region of northern India. Draw and paint a simple Mithila-inspired masterpiece characterized by eye-catching geometrical patterns. Offered in conjunction with Arts & Humanities Month. Traditional dances are a treat to watch and are rooted in ancient scriptures. Learn about the origins and evolution of these musical and dance traditions. 115169 Mon Oct 8 6–8 p.m. Cary Diwali Saturday, October 13 | 10 a.m.–8:30 p.m. | Free Koka Booth Amphitheatre The 18th Annual Cary Diwali celebrates the Festival of Lights. Enjoy music, dance, and theater performances; a handicraft bazaar; food from local Indian restaurants; an exhibition of Indian art and culture; activities for children; and yoga demonstrations. The event is capped off by a rework show over Symphony Lake. The theme of this year's Cary Diwali is "DRISHTI—A Window to the World."Cary Diwali is presented by Hum Sub, Inc. and the Town of Cary.
