look what's new IN 2019, THE CARY TEEN COUNCIL celebrates 30 years of service! Formed in 1989, the Cary Teen Council was created by a handful of teens as a way to connect to other peers in the area. Since then, it has evolved into a service-focused organization whose mission is to empower young people with the core values of leadership, accountability, and a heart for service. It is now the state's largest and most diverse youth council, collectively providing over 20,000 hours of service last year. The Council, made up of students in rising grades nine through 11, provides teens with opportunities to participate in programs that focus on volunteerism, leadership, community awareness, teamwork, education, and fundraising. Members help with signature Town events, including Spring Daze Festival, Breakfast with the Bunny, Santa's Workshop, and Herbert's Haunted House. They can also be seen volunteering at the Cary Senior Center, local elementary schools, Town of Cary summer camps, and various charitable events. Through fundraising efforts and event profits, the Council has donated tens of thousands of dollars to local organizations helping to make a difference in the lives of others. The Cary Teen Council is a three-time winner of North Carolina's Most Outstanding Council, earned the Voluntary Service Award by the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) in 2010, and won the Jefferson Award for Public Service in 2013. "We are very proud to see our members recognized for their hard work volunteering both within the Town of Cary as well as local area schools and organizations all year long," says Doug Peters, Program Assistant—Teens. The Town of Cary is indebted to the service provided by members of Cary Teen Council the past 30 years. If you see a member at an event in their bright red Cary Teen Council shirt, be sure to thank them for their service!
