Building the Dream: Affordable Housing in Wake County Friday, January 18 | 9 a.m.-noon Cary Arts Center In 1966, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. began an organization called the Chicago Freedom Movement to call attention to the poor conditions under which many were forced to live. This movement laid the groundwork for what would become the country's Fair Housing Act. Join us as we bring together government leaders, builders, and policy makers to address the issue of affordable housing in Wake County. Remembering the Leaders of the Dream Saturday, January 19 | 10–11:30 a.m. | Ages 4-10 Cary Arts Center Hear award-winning storyteller and author Willa Brigham as she shares stories about some of the key leaders of the Civil Rights movement. This family- friendly program will introduce young people to heroes who, through their efforts and sacrifices, made a big difference. Take a photo with a life-size portrait of them and enjoy hands-on crafts. "Wilmington On Fire" Saturday, January 19 | 2 p.m. Cary Arts Center "Wilmington on Fire" is a film about the Wilmington Massacre of 1898, a bloody attack on the African- American community which left countless numbers of African-Americans dead or exiled from the city. This event was the springboard for the White Supremacy movement and Jim Crow segregation throughout North Carolina and the American South. Director Christopher Everett will lead an audience discussion after the screening. Celebrating the Dream Saturday, January 19 | 8 p.m. Cary Arts Center We come together to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King as we carry his work forward. An evening of song and music featuring the Pleasant Grove Church Gospel Choir, harpist Winifred Garrett, and the North Carolina Central University Vocal Jazz Ensemble. The Cary Theater presents: Al: My Brother Sunday, January 20 | 2 p.m. The Cary Theater Al: My Brother is a documentary about the life of white civil rights activist and attorney Alan McSurely and his over 50-year battle against racism. This is an inspiring and instructive film for all ages and races. The film's producer/writer/director, Cash Michaels, will lead an audience discussion following the screening. Service & The Dream: MLK Day of Service Monday, January 21 Shift A | 10 a.m.-noon Shift B | 2–4 p.m. Good Hope Farm, 1580 Morrisville Carpenter Road Give back to your community! Help prepare the soil at our newly opened urban agriculture and historic site— Good Hope Farm. With a goal of connecting needy families to healthy foods, bring one nonperishable food item each to be donated to a local food pantry. Be prepared to get dirty! Coordinated by the Town of Cary Spruce program. Volunteers age 15 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is required.
