VISUAL ARTS PART TWO REGISTER ONLINE: classweb.townofcary.org 57 Metals & Jewelry BEGINNING Intro to Lapidary: Cabochons (age 16 & up) Learn basic skills to plan, select material, use machines and tools to cut, shape, and polish semi-precious and precious gemstone. Create cabochons for use in jewelry designs. Setting the stones will also be covered. Tools are provided for use. Metals and stones are available for purchase through the Cary Arts Center. Instructor: David Tomlin Fees: $100(R) $130(N) (6 classes) 121248 Mon Jan 28–Mar 4 7–9:30 p.m. Beginning Metals & Jewelry (age 16 & up) Learn metalsmithing techniques to create jewelry and small objects/sculptures. Soldering, sawing, forging, finishing, and surface embellishments are techniques covered. Using sheet metal and wire students may choose to create their own projects. Supplies can be purchased at the Cary Arts Center. Successful completion of this class satisfies your eligibility for an Open Studio Pass. Carving wax can create intricate and complex details that you can't achieve in metal fabrication. Students may cast at least one of their pieces in metal (sterling silver) and learn to bring the cast piece to a desired finish. Successful completion of a Beginning Metals class qualifies students to purchase a Metals Studio Card to access the studio and use the equipment to work on individual projects.
