New segments of greenway are continually in various stages of design and construction. The most recently completed sections include the final leg of White Oak Creek Greenway between Green Level Church Road and the American Tobacco Trail and the Crabtree Creek Greenway along the south side of Lake Crabtree between B•ack Creek Greenway and Evans Road. LOOKING F w d The current tally of just over 80 miles of trail would have seemed very ambitious to the members of that first Greenways Commission back in the 70s. But a look forward reveals a master-p•anned greenways system of over 200 miles! Future years will bring continued growth of the network with a focus on filling gaps and making connections. A gap analysis and prioritization model is being completed to help focus efforts and to ensure Cary continues to put forth projects that can successfully compete for grant funding. Much of the federal funding is geared towards enhancing multi-modal transportation options and the Town will continue to focus on opportunities to integrate its on- road and off-road bicycle and pedestrian transportation infrastructure, including linking and coordination with public transit. Expanding regional connectivity among the greenways will also provide increased opportunities for greenway tourism and events. The Triangle region currently has approximately 320 miles of greenways and is one of the •argest greenway networks in the country. Cary has contributed greatly to this network, and is positioned well among the longer, regional routes including the 26-mile American Tobacco Trail along Cary's western border and the East Coast Greenway (a national trail network extending from Maine to Florida) following the White Oak and B•ack Creek Greenways from east to west for 15 miles across Cary. The proactive p•anning and sustained efforts of visionary citizens, Councils and staff over the years have positioned Cary well with an exceptional and extensive greenways network, and as a leader in the field.
