GALLERY EXHIBITIONS PART ONE REGISTER ONLINE: mycary.org 19 Cary Visual Art: Celebrating 20 Years Cary Arts Center Display Cases Through Sunday, January 26 Medium: Mixed Media Display Since 1996, this Cary institution has supported and promoted visual arts and public art in the Cary community. Originally founded to bring public art to the Cary landscape this non-profit organization supports scholarships to rising Seniors who are pursuing studies in art and design and they co-sponsor many of the Town's Public Art efforts to integrate artwork into parks, greenways, and public facilities. Mary Kircher: Formations Page-Walker Arts & History Center January 8–February 5 Artist Reception: Friday, January 31 | 6–8 p.m. Medium: Textiles Kircher states, "The wilderness is my muse. Towering arches, massive boulders, deep canyons call for exploration and interpretation. My simple images never capture the atmosphere or experience. I attempt to translate the awe and majesty of these places through tapestry." Jeffery Weatherford: You Can Fly–The Tuskegee Airmen Page-Walker Arts & History Center January 8–February 8 Artist Reception: Friday, January 31 | 6–8 p.m. Medium: Scratchboard Illustrations Weatherford's original scratchboard illustrations pay homage to America's first African American pilots during World War II. They were created specifically for a children's book created by mother-son duo, Carole and Jeffery Boston Weatherford. "You Can Fly" is Jeffery's debut title! Fabric Pottery by Sweetgum Design Page-Walker Arts & History Center January 8–February 8 Artist Reception: Friday, January 31 | 6–8 p.m. Medium: Mixed Sweetgum Design fabric pottery, by Mary Elkins, is primarily made using Indonesian Batik fabric that provides rich, saturated color patterns to produce bold and colorful pottery pieces. Metallic and solid color fabrics are used to accent areas along with embellishments such as shells, buttons, appliques, ceramic or metal accents, and beads. Michael Weitzman: Natural Beauty Herbert C. Young Community Center Gallery January 31–March 23 Artist Reception: Friday, January 31 | 6–8 p.m. Medium: Photography This exhibit of new and older works—many on canvas and metal—by North Carolina and New York nature photographer Michael Weitzman displays his ability to utilize living colors and light to capture a fleeting moment in time. Zip 27519 Bond Park Community Center January 2–February 29 Artist Reception January 31 | 6–8 p.m. Medium: Watercolor Cary has undergone rapid growth in population as well as multi-cultural diversity. Art knows no boundaries. It speaks a universal language that has brought us together. This exhibition features three Cary artists (Lyudmila Tomova, Rani Ray, and Joe Godfrey) from vastly different countries and cultures residing within zip code 27519. It showcases their recent watercolor paintings depicting their journey as artists residing within 27519. Russ Hughes: Roadside Rustic Town Hall Gallery January 29–April 17 Medium: Acrylic Paintings, Art Markers, Pen & Ink Hughes shares, "A painting is a story. I'm interested in telling the hard-edged stories of rural American life, as seen along the roadside in the form of abandoned clapboard farmhouses, deteriorating barns, and the rusted- out, lonely, tractors and pickup trucks silently deteriorating at the edge of an old crop row or underneath the awning of an old barn. I find that each has a forgotten spirit that I'm attempting to rekindle." RUSS HUGHES
