CULINARY PART TWO 86 REGISTER ONLINE: mycary.org Food for Life: Diabetes Initiative (age 18 & up) In this 4-week series, learn how a plant-based diet reduces the risk of diabetes and greatly benefits those already diagnosed with the disease. Each class presents nutritional information and meal preparation in a supportive group setting. Lunch is provided. Thu Apr 9–30 6:30–8:30 p.m. 002436 Location: Herbert C. Young Community Center Instructor: John Tepedino Fees: $120(R) $150(N) (4 classes) Royal Icing Flowers (age 16 & up) This class will teach a variety of beautiful royal icing flowers and leaves for your special occasion cakes. As a bonus we will cover royal icing eyeballs and cookie techniques. Bring containers to take your wet flowers home. Sat Apr 18 1–4 p.m. 001864 Location: Herbert C. Young Community Center Instructor: Sandra Bishop-Freeman Fees: $31(R) $40(N) (1 class) Special Occasion Cakes (age 16 & up) In this advanced class, learn how to successfully stack a cake and how to cover a cake in fondant. You will prep, cook, and enjoy cuisines from different countries. Engage in fun discussions about adaptations to the meal, all while you enjoy the tunes of that country's music. Young Community Center Instructor: Laura Gnewuch Fees: $35(R) $46(N) (1 class) Food For Life: Cancer Project (age 18 & up) In this four-week course, learn how to prepare cancer- fighting meals loaded with antioxidants and phytochemicals, high-fiber and low-fat foods, and healthy dairy alternatives. The series also provides information on planning meals and maintaining a healthy weight. Dinner is included. Thu Feb 13–Mar 5 6:30–8:30 p.m. 002435 Location: Herbert C. Young Community Center Instructor: John Tepedino Fees: $120(R) $150(N) (4 classes) Cakes 101 (age 16 & up) This two-class basic cake course will begin with the fundamentals of baking, prepping a cake, and many tips and tricks to help you improve your baking. Decorating techniques will be taught including use of piping bags and metal tips to create borders, flowers, and designs. Before coming to class, your homework will be to make and ice a cake.
