The facility has participated in the program since 1995 and has received the Directors Award annually since 2003. The President's Award has requirements that are substantially more stringent than the Directors Award. OZONE GENERATORS The Cary/Apex Water Treatment Facility utilizes ozone as an advanced treatment process that acts as a critical barrier in the overall water treatment process by providing for the removal and control of organics, taste and odor compounds, and harmful microbiological contaminants. The three original ozone generators that were installed in 2002 were replaced in 2021. The ozone is formed by reacting gaseous oxygen with high voltage electricity in the core of the ozone generator vessels. Ozone is key in the water plant's drinking water compliance strategy.
