Modern wastewater systems are comprised of underground gravity and
pressured pipelines. In fact, Cary has over 1,000 miles of sewer lines —
enough pipelines to stretch across our state twice from end to end!
Since pipelines are underground and hard to access, how does a
municipality like Cary maintain this infrastructure?

SMOKE TESTING
Sends a safe, non-harmful smoke through
pipelines and residential laterals to help
locate areas where storm water and other
surface waters are entering the system.
This in part also helps reveal sources of
sewer-related odor.
