Employee Wellness TOWN OF CARY Benefits Handbook Page 43 BEREAVEMENT LEAVE A full-time, regular employee will receive up to forty (40) hours of paid Bereavement Leave (BVL) to use for the loss of an immediate family member; BVL is prorated for part-time employees. An employee should request to use BVL in advance and as soon as feasible in accordance with departmental procedures. An employee needing to take more than the available amount may request to use sick leave, vacation leave, or other available paid leave. More information can be found in the Bereavement Leave Guidelines. SHARED LEAVE Employees, who have exhausted all available accrued leave and continue to be required to care for themselves or an eligible immediate family member due to a serious medical condition, may request shared leave. The lifetime maximum shared leave that a recipient may receive, and use is 240 hours. SHORT TERM DISABILITY BENEFIT If an employee is unable to work due to a non work-related accident or illness and exhausts all available sick leave, Cary's self-insured Short Term Disability Policy pays one half of the employee's normally scheduled hours up to a maximum of 26 weeks in accordance with the Short Term Disability Insurance – Policy Statement 39 If light duty is available within an employee's restrictions and is not accepted, the employee is no longer eligible for Short Term Disability. OTHER LEAVE Other leave that may be available includes: • Educational Leave • Jury Duty/Civil Leave • Leave without Pay • Military Leave for Active Duty and Training WORKERS COMP When an eligible employee is injured on the job and meets the 7 day waiting period, the eligible employee receives 66 2 / 3 of pay when out of work. An eligible employee must supplement this pay with paid FML if available and thereafter may supplement workers comp pay with other accrued vacation, sick and paid leaves. If light duty is available, the employee must accept light duty or use accrued leave. Leave options may be limited. Contact Total Employee Health for more information.
