C A RY, N O RT H C A R O L I N A A N N U A L WAT E R Q U A L I T Y R E P O R T 2 0 2 3 12 V I O L AT I O N T H AT C A RY 'S WAT E R SYS T E M R E C E I V E D I N 2 0 2 3 During 2023, we received an E. coli MCL violation that covered the time period of May 4–5, 2023. To assure this does not happen again, we implemented the following corrective actions: we replaced the sample station with a brand-new sampling station and we reviewed and amended our standard protocols for verifying proper practices are followed by contractors to prevent contamination. R E Q U I R E D ASS E SS M E N T D U E T O A N E . C O L I M C L V I O L AT I O N E. coli are bacteria whose presence indicates that the water may be contaminated with human or animal wastes. Human pathogens in these wastes can cause short-term effects, such as diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches, or other symptoms. They may pose a greater health risk for infants, young children, the elderly, and people with severely compromised immune systems. We found E. coli bacteria, indicating the need to look for potential problems in water treatment or distribution. When this occurs, we are required to conduct assessment(s) to identify problems and to correct any problems that were found during these assessments. We were required to complete a Level 2 assessment because we found E. coli in our water system. In addition, we were required to take two corrective actions and we completed both of these actions. Our technicians monitor the safety of the drinking water in our distribution system to verify the drinking water meets regulations and to safeguard public health.
