Keynote Speaker, Mrs. Evelyn Morgan- Mahon, will share her perspective on empowering women and tell about her involvement in the Civil Rights Movement. In addition there will be a Fashion Show honoring the "Dress for Success" program that provides clothing for women seeking employment. • DREAM OF EXPRESSION Childhood Memories: Pinkie Strother Presented as part of MLK, Jr. Dreamfest Page-Walker Arts & History Center Wednesday, Jan. 7 – Saturday, Feb. 21, 2015 Artist Reception: Friday, Jan. 30, 6-8 p.m.. Medium: Mixed / Dioramas The artist states, "Childhood Memories is my depiction of the African-American culture in the 50's and 60's in the coastal rural South. I believe the responsibility of an artist is to convey the spirit of society." Strother includes a special tribute work depicting Martin Luther King, Jr. delivering his famous "I Have a Dream" speech in her display. • A DREAM OF COMMUNITY The Cary Theater Saturday, January 17 | 12 -3 p.m. | Free In celebration of Dr. King's Life & Legacy, we are honored to present Mrs. Naomi King, who with her husband A.D. King provided quiet support for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. Mrs. King will share how she worked to fulfill her brother-in law's dreams for community. A documentary, A. D. King, Brother to the Dreamer. will also be shown. A.D. King's motto was "A threat to justice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere and building a beloved community is a glorious task that must be done." • AN ARTS TRIBUTE TO MARTIN Page-Walker Arts & History Center Sunday, January 18 | 3 p.m. | Free "I Rise Still" is a dramatic presentation of collective works by Black Writers. The prose and free verse of each work shows evidence of a culture which celebrates a spirituality and collective introspection evident in each passionately performed monologue, dance and song. • DREAM OF DEMOCRACY MARCH Downtown Raleigh Monday, January 19 | 10 a.m. | Free Join people from across the Triangle at the Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative March in downtown Raleigh. Roundtrip transportation, leaving at 10 a.m., will be offered from Cary Town Hall, 316 N. Academy Street. Space is limited. To RSVP call (919) 460-4963. • DAY OF SERVICE Middle Creek Community Park Monday, January 19 | 10 a.m. & 2 p.m. | Free The MLK, Jr. Day of Service is a great way to give back to your community. Volunteers take on a variety of hands-on tasks to help maintain the area around Middle Creek Community Center. Be prepared to get dirty! Coordinated by the Town of Cary Spruce program.
