Water Resources Outreach For over a decade, Cary volunteers have helped prevent pollution of our streams and educate citizens by marking stormdrains with the corresponding river basin. The Town has switched to using adhesive labels, which are easier to apply and soon you'll see a new design including contact information for reporting stormwater pollution. At the Town's Kite Festival, Water Resources participated in the EPA's 8th annual "Fix a Leak Week" by encouraging customers to register and use Aquastar to find potential leaks. Eight citizens registered for an Aquastar account and another 32 picked up instructions about how to monitor for leaks. Beat the Peak! This summer's theme - Know your days to help get through the summer haze - will focus on reminding our utility customers about watering on alternate days, which helps us reduce capital costs by spreading out peak day demands. Interbasin Transfer (IBT) On March 12, 2015, the Environmental Management Commission granted an IBT certificate modification to the Towns of Cary and Apex. The 2015 IBT certificate, which addresses the needs of Cary, Apex, Morrisville and RTP South through 2045 based on our Long-Range Water Resources Plan, allows transfers from the Haw River subbasin to the Neuse River subbasini up to 31 million gallsons per day (mgd) and from the Haw River Subbasin to the Cape Fear subbasin up to 2mgd, calculated as a daily average of a calendar month. January-March monthly average transfers have been about 11 mgd to the Neuse and 0.1 mgd to the Cape Fear. This project is nearly complete. Upon completion, it will extend the reclaimed water distribution system along Green Level Church Road southward to Thomas Brooks Park. This reclaimed water line, called for in the Town's current Reclaimed Water System Master Plan, will provide reclaimed water to customers in western Cary including Thomas Brooks Park and the USA Baseball National Training Complex. The reclaimed water will be supplied by Durham County. Construction will be complete in Spring 2015. Rainfall from January to March 2015 was 9.5 inches over the average of 10.8 inches. At the end of the quarter, the area has seen 10.6 inches above normal rainfall over the past year. Floodplain Map Updates Preliminary maps for Wake County have been released by NC Floodplain Mapping Program and are awaiting final release for the Revised Chatham County maps. Staff has prepared a communications plan for the Wake County FEMA Map update, since it will likely impact a larger number of citizens than the Chatham County maps. The Town will host a public meeting to present the preliminary maps to citizens once the maps are released. An LDO update will be required to adopt the new maps once the appeal period has expired and the maps are finalized. Northwestern Area Reclaimed Water Project - Phase II
