Stories in Stone: A Look Back at Umstead's Past Thursday, September 24 | 7:30 p.m. | Free Inspired by Tom Weber's book Stories in Stone, this program shares memories from the community that once existed where William B. Umstead State Park is today. An accompanying photography exhibition will be on display from September 24-November 14. There will also be a guided hike at Umstead State Park on September 26 at 9 a.m. Co-sponsored by the Umstead Coalition. Collecting and Sharing Oral Histories in the Digital Age Thursday, October 27 | 7:30 p.m. | Free At its core, an oral history interview is story-telling. Learn how the Friends of Page-Walker capture the stories of our community. Then, in partnership with the Southern Oral History Program at UNC, hear how they are shared information online so that historians, students and curators can learn more about what makes Cary the community it is today. Guided History Tours of the Page-Walker and Downtown Cary Groups of 10 to 25 people can request a customized guided tour of the Page-Walker Arts & History Center, including the historic Page-Walker Hotel, the Page Educational Garden, and parts of Downtown Cary. PAGE-WALKER ARTS & HISTORY CENTER The Page-Walker was built in 1868 as a railroad hotel by Town of Cary founder Allison Francis Page and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A complete restoration in the 1990s converted the building into an arts and history center. Alive with classes, events, performances, exhibitions, receptions and meetings, the Page-Walker boasts fine arts exhibits featuring local and regional artists, an Educational Garden with the Page Smokehouse, and the Cary Heritage Museum.
