Over 200 rising kindergartners participated in Safety Town 2015 at Herb Young Community Center. Campers learned different aspects of safety with presentations from Cary EMS, 911 Center, Fire Department, Public Works, Animal Control and Police Department. School Resource Officers provided bike and traffic sign instructions. The week ended with a graduation for all! The first week of Space I.D. (Innovation & Design) Camp hosted 48 astronaut wannabes and future engineers. Campers built and launched rockets, learned about computer programming and robotics, enjoyed a visit from a NASA Ambassador, built a roboXplorer robot, a solar oven, an egg-drop vehicle and visited the Museum of Science...just to name a few activities! Nature Programs On June 6, over 80 volunteers joined with Hemlock Bluffs staff for the annual National Trails Day. Trail donors REI and the Jandy Ammons Foundation were in attendance. Following the ribbon-cutting ceremony, volunteers mulched Chestnut Oak Loop Trail, re- graveled the stairs on Swift Creek Loop Trail, decorated new stepping stones and refreshed the Recycle and Children's gardens. Teen Council Over 900 teens (483 renewals + 496 June applications) will be starting the 2015-2016 Teen Council year. The first new member meeting was held in June with over 350 in attendance. This meeting serves as a training point for new applicants to understand the process and expectations of Council. Specialized Recreation The Abilities Tennis Program, a partnership between the Town, Abilities Tennis Association of NC and the Western Wake Tennis Association, has more than doubled in registrants since the first clinics were introduced last year.
