The Friends of Page-Walker's 30th Anniversary Ice Cream Social was a successful "homecoming" celebration. The Mayor, many members of Council, former board and staff members were all in attendance. Ashworth's provided hand scooped ice- cream and a barber shop quartet added a "folksy" atmosphere. The herb garden was officially renamed in honor of Anne Kratzer, Friends founder. Page-Walker Arts & History Center The Page-Walker saw huge crowds during Lazy Daze with an estimated attendance of 10,000 visitors. Activities and entertainment were offered throughout the building. Also, the Sister Cities hosted a Beer Garden and Little German Band in the garden for patrons. The Bluegrass Jam Camp students performed in the morning and a folk duo entertained in the afternoon. INFRASTRUCTURE Cary Green Neighborhood Program Planning for the Wells Fargo Environmental Solutions for Communities Grant has begun. This project will be a pilot that aims at extensively engaging and collaborating with four to eight neighborhoods in Town with the goal of nurturing these neighborhoods into champions of healthy, vibrant and sustainable communities. A Building Automation System (BAS) now allows staff to control Town Hall's heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) system in "unoccupied" mode when meetings are not occurring, which saves energy and money. Additionally, staff at The Cary Theater, the Cary Arts Center, Bond Park Community Center and Senior Center, WakeMed Soccer Park, Herb Young Community Center, the Garmon Operations Center and Jordan Hall have been trained to use the BAS to manage and monitor the operation of their HVAC system. Sustainability Grants Update The Town has progressed quickly on its path to national recognition thus far achieving certifications of 224 homes, 6 schools and 6 public spaces. Community Wildlife Habitat Staff completed a set of energy efficiency retrofits to most fire stations as one of the final tasks in the multi-year grant which focuses on energy efficiency in fire and police departments. EPA Climate Showcase Communities Did You Know? Cary It Green Facebook Page This continues to be a multi-departmental communication effort allowing staff to communicate with citizens about conservation programs and initiatives. The peak engagement for this quarter was 3,913 on September 29 and the page now has 972 likes. Joulebug This app helps connect users with options to live green, save money, connect with friends and have fun! The Town has 258 users who have collectively avoided 608,000 lbs of CO2 emissions, 675,000 gallons of water, and 30,000 lbs of waste by their buzzed actions.
