52 REGISTER ONLINE: classweb.townofcary.org ARTS PART TWO Metals and Jewelry, Intermediate I (age 16 & up) In this class, you will learn to make a silver ring with a bezel set stone setting, a decorative silver chain bracelet, and a soldered hollow-formed pendant. The supply list will be provided at the first class. Some metals and wire are available for purchase at the Cary Arts Center. Prerequisite: Beginning Metals and Jewelry class. Instructor: Hsiang-Ting Yen Fees: $114(R) $144(N) (5 classes) 91290 Mon Feb 29-Apr 4 6:30-9:30 p.m. (no class Mar 21) Etching (age 16 & up) Learn about etching, which is the process that uses nitric acid to remove areas of metal from the surface of a piece. Free-hand draw your design or use PNP blue paper to pursue the exact details from a printed image. With the combination of cuff forming, you can create a cuff with your unique patterns. Metal can be purchased from the Cary Arts Center. Other supplies and tools are provided. Prerequisite: Beginning Metals and Jewelry class. Instructor: Hsiang-Ting Yen Fees: $98(R) $125(N) (2 classes) 90986 Sun Mar 6-13 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Introduction to Wire Wrapping (age 16 & up) This class will introduce students to the basics of wire- wrapped jewelry. Learn the tools and basic techniques needed to get started making a wire-wrapped pendant with a gemstone bead and a wire-wrapped ring. A $10 supply fee is payable to the instructor at the beginning of class. Instructor: Oxana Howes Fees: $33(R) $43(N) (1 class) 90984 Wed Mar 16 6-9 p.m. Metals and Jewelry Setting the Facetted Stone (age 16 & up) Create a one-of-a-kind basket-type setting for a ring or pendant for a facetted stone. Students should bring a 6mm round facetted stone. Prerequisite required. Instructor: David Tomlin Fees: $81(R) $108(N) (4 classes) 91017 Wed Jan 6-27 6:30-9:30 p.m. 24kt Gold Fusing (Keum-Boo) (age 16 & up) Design a personal ornament using Keum-Boo, an ancient Korean gilding technique that fuses 24kt gold foil onto a thin, fine silver surface. If you love two-toned jewelry, don't miss this class. There is a one-hour break for lunch each day. Metals can be purchased from the Cary Arts Center. Recommended: Beginning Metals and Jewelry class. Instructor: Hsiang-Ting Yen Fees: $91(R) $117(N) (2 classes) 90989 Sat Jan 9-16 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Beginning Metals and Jewelry (age 16 & up) Learn to saw, file, texture, hammer, solder, polish, as well as other basic metalsmithing techniques while creating small sculptures, earrings, or pendants. Learn to use hot and cold fabrication techniques to emboss, rivet, embellish, and pierce. Learn to solder with an acetylene torch. Metals can be purchased at the Cary Arts Center. This class satisfies your eligibility for an Open Studio pass.
