Annual Nitrogen Removal Performance The Town's water reclamation facilities return treated wastewater to the Neuse River Basin and the Cape Fear River Basin. The facilities have annual nitrogen limits on the pounds of nitrogen or nutrients they are allowed to discharge or return to the receiving stream. Removing nutrients is important because high levels of nutrients in a water body can adversely impact water quality. All three wastewater treatment facilities operated by Cary consistently treat to reduce nitrogen levels well below their annual permitted allotment, as shown below. Nitrogen removal efficiency typically ranges from 94% to 96% removal. School Resource Officers reported crimes in Cary area schools during the first quarter of 2016. This was a decrease from the previous quarter. 15 18 lockdown drills completed during the quarter. 13 presentations conducted by SRO's with approximately 580 students attending. The topics included themes such as drugs, alcohol abuse and social media issues. Above is K-9 Officer Seth Everett and his partner "Chase," preparing for their next successful run at the annual United States Police Canine Association Trials. Traffic Safety Team (TST) TST participated in several joint campaigns, including seat belt and speeding enforcement. The total agency traffic stops for the quarter were 5,500 and the number of motor vehicle crashes investigated was 1,065. Above, Officer Dennis Abels provides a briefing prior to deployment for a multi-agency seatbelt enforcement operation in February. DID YOU KNOW? TST provided a traffic safety display at Weatherstone Elementary School, attended a Safe Routes to School event at Northwoods Elementary and presented Driver Education information at Panther Creek and Green Hope High Schools. The South Cary WRF just completed its annual permit compliance inspection in March. The inspection report indicated the facility was in full compliance with permit requirements and no response items were noted.
