Students should bring a 6mm round facetted stone. Prerequisite required. Tackle soldering for building structure and volume. Refine introductory metals skills and complex fabrication. Push ideas through jewelry, small containers, or sculptures. Cabochon Stone bezel setting will be covered. Metals are available for purchase at Art Center. Prerequisite: Beginning Metals at Cary Arts Center. Instructor: Linda Simpson Fees: $101(R) $131(N) (5 classes) 96591 Tue Oct 25–Nov 22 6:30–9:30 p.m. Enameling 101 (16 & up) Enamel means glass fused on metal. You will learn how to play with opaque color powdered enamels alone with basic enameling techniques including kiln-firing, sifting, graffiti, and sgraffito to explore the unlimited color and pattern possibilities with your own creations. Tools will be provided. There is a one-hour break for lunch each day. Metals can be purchased. Prerequisite: A Beginning Metals and Jewelry class. Instructor: Hsiang-Ting Yen Fees: $91(R) $117(N) (2 classes) 96583 Sat Oct 22–29 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Etching (16 & up) Etching is a process that uses nitric acid to remove areas of metal from the surface of a piece. With the combination of cuff forming, you can create a cuff with your unique patterns to make a statement for your winter outfit! Metal can be purchased from the Center. Other supplies and tools provided. Prerequisite: Beginning Metals and Jewelry class. Instructor: Hsiang-Ting Yen Fees: $98(R) $125(N) (2 classes) 96582 Sun Nov 13–20 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Wire Wrapping: Intermediate (16 & up) This class is for students who have taken the introductory class or have a basic knowledge of wire wrapping. The class will build on the introductory class and introduce students to more complex techniques as we make a pendant and ring. A $15 supply fee is payable to the instructor at the beginning of class. Instructor: Oxana Howes Fees: $33(R) $43(N) (1 class) 96585 Wed Sep 28 6–9 p.m. Effortless Metal Forming by Hydraulic Press (16 & up) Copper and silver sheet can be pressed into 3–D forms by applying hydraulic press and using a die to define the shape of the outer edge. It makes forming more accessible and creates the depth and volume to a personal ornament. Prerequisite: A Beginning Metals and Jewelry class. Instructor: Hsiang-Ting Yen Fees: $91(R) $117(N) (2 classes) 96592 Sun Sep 25–Oct 2 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Beginning Metals and Jewelry (16 & up) Learn to saw, file, texture, hammer, solder, polish, and other basic metalsmithing techniques while creating small sculptures, earrings, or pendants. Use hot and cold fabrication techniques to emboss, rivet, embellish, pierce; then solder with an acetylene torch. Metals are available for purchase at Center.
