They will construct a shock-absorbing system designed to protect two marshmallow astronauts in a lunar vehicle, create their own air-powered rockets, and assemble a model blimp that actually takes flight! Young Community Center Instructor: Engineering for Kids Fees: $89(R) $116(N) (2 classes) 97282 Mon, Wed Nov 7–9 1–4 p.m. Invader Defense Alien Invasion (age 8–10) Participants will create their own invader defense game where they defend against an invasion. The Engineering Design Process is used to create a storyboard to outline the rules of play and characters for our game. Then we will use Clickteam Fusion 2.5 ® to bring our storyboard to life with programming. Everyone takes home a working Windows-compatible game! Location: Middle Creek Community Center Instructor: Engineering for Kids Fees: $117(R) $147(N) (4 classes) 97373 Sat Oct 15–Nov 5 1–3 p.m. Invader Defense Shark Attack (age 8–10) Participants will create their own invader defense game designed to protect a coral reef from hungry sharks. The Engineering Design Process is used to create a storyboard and outline the rules of play for the game. The Clickteam Fusion 2.5 ® will bring the storyboard to life. Students build a dancing bird, a smart spinner, and a drumming monkey. They also learn how to program and operate their creations using a laptop computer. NASA: Academy for Future Space Explorers (age 6–10) Explore planets, moons, and other space phenomena in our solar system. Build your own Mad Science rocket and launch one with the group. Location: Bond Park Community Center Instructor: Mad Science Fees: $147(R) $177(N) (8 classes) 97055 Thu Sep 15–Nov 3 5–6 p.m. Chemical Engineering—Mix It Up! (age 7–10) Students will use the Engineering Design Process to design, create, test, and refine various mixtures and solutions with different chemical properties. They will develop solutions to clean up an oil spill, synthesize their own rocket fuel, and investigate the secrets behind color pigmentation. Location: Herbert C. Young Community Center Instructor: Engineering for Kids Fees: $88(R) $116(N) (2 classes) 97279 Tue, Thu Sep 13–15 1–4 p.m. Civil Engineering—Building Up (age 7–10) Students will use the Engineering Design Process to design, create, test, and refine a balsawood bridge designed to withstand the greatest force. They will examine different types of bridge designs and discover how the forces of tension, compression, bending, torsion, and shear are distributed throughout their structures. Location: Herbert C.
