Project PHOENIX Parks staff supported the Police program by developing activities such as t-ball and emoji crafts for the families living in the Westwood, Pine Ridge, Chatham Forest, and Oxford Square communities. And in August, activities included soccer, slap bracelets and superhero masks for 95 kids and 11 parents/adults at The Grove, Merriwood, Westwood, Chatham Forest, Oxford Square and Williamsburg Manor. Children in the program wrote "Thank you" cards to our officers and they are on display in the Police Department. Specialized Recreation Programs Over the quarter, 34 programs were offered with 229 participants. This included six new programs, such as Disc Golf Clinic, Boating, Scrapbooking and Archery for All. Throughout the summer, four Inclusion Counselors were hired to assist at various summer camps. Inclusion support was provided at various facilities around Town, including Bond Park Community Center, Cary Tennis Park, Cary Arts Center and Cary Senior Center. Environmental Outreach Programs Volunteers worked for five days at the new Carpenter Park Community Garden. There are 48 beds in the community garden for community members to rent and an additional section of beds for volunteers, school groups and workshops to use for garden education. Three new Adopt a Spot locations were added for a total of 64 Spots across Town. AM Howard Farm urban agriculture project has prepared 20 acres of farmland with compost and lime, and a winter crop has been planted in preparation for spring plantings in 2017. Water and electric infrastructure are underway. The Town has reached 90% of our goal to achieve town-wide certification as a registered Community Wildlife Habitat with the National Wildlife Federation. Cary Garden for Wildlife 9/11 Day of Service In remembrance of September 11 events, volunteers built a substantial vegetable garden for firefighters at Fire Station 3. Over 20 volunteers participating in constructing and planting the garden.
