During the 2015-2016 reporting period, there were no permit compliance violations at the water reclamation facilities and 10 reportable sewer overflows for the year. Residential Cooking Oil: Curbside Collection The Town's full-time Residential Waste Cooking Oil Disposal Program is designed to give Cary residents an opportunity to properly dispose of cooking oil and grease and "Turn F.O.G. into fuel by recycling Fats, Oils, and Grease." The accompanying chart depicts participation rates since the program began in November 2008. The program was launched in July 2009. This program has gained in popularity in part through the joint education efforts of the Cary It Green Facebook Page team, the Block Leader Program, and attending civic events to promote the program. In August, the Town's 2015-2016 annual report was released electronically. The report is developed to keep citizens and customers informed of programs related to the operation, maintenance, and performance of the Town's wastewater collection and treatment systems. It also satisfies a regulatory requirement related to wastewater discharge permits. The report is located on the Town's website as well as in hard copy at Town Hall, Community Centers, and the local library. Annual Wastewater Report Safest City in America Cary has consistently been ranked as the safest community in our state and among the safest in the nation. In October, media report Cary is the safest community of our size in America based on FBI crime statistics. This recognition speaks to the effective partnership we have with our citizens since safety is a shared responsibility. Emergency Response Team Takes First Place Cary's Emergency Response Team is overall winner of the 2016 NC Justice Academy & NC Tactical Officers Association Annual SWAT Competition. The team competed in Butner, NC against other teams from across the state. Cary's team was originally formed in 1993 and this is the first time Cary PD has won the overall competition. The team placed 1st in the "Reaching Out" event and 2nd in 'Can't Breath,' 'Lone Survivor,' 'Man Down,' and 'Team Carry' events. The competitors were tested both mentally and physically as their tactics, stamina and problem solving skills were challenged at every turn.
