look what's new CARY BRINGS HOME THE GOLD! Cary has been named the 2016 Gold Medal Award winner for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management. The American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration, in partnership with the National Recreation and Park Association, honors communities that demonstrate excellence in parks and recreation through long-range planning, resource management, volunteerism, environmental stewardship, program development, professional development, and agency recognition. Agencies are judged on their ability to address the needs of those they serve through the collective energies of citizens, staff and elected of cials. A panel of ve professionals, chosen for their considerable experience and knowledge in parks and recreation on both the local and national level, reviews and judges each application and Cary was announced as a nalist in April. We are a re ection of our community and the result of comprehensive planning, and an unrelenting commitment to an extraordinary quality of life. You, the citizens, are invloved in such a way that makes our community second to none. In 2015, you provided over 30,000 volunteer hours and served on 15 boards and committees. Nearly 1,000 Cary teens are engaged in leadership and service opportunities through our state's largest teen council. You have made your voices heard and supported the creation of an impressive 82 miles of greenways, 2,600 acres of parks and open space, major world class athletic venues, 13 staffed facilities, and extraordinary arts venues. Cary strives to meet the challenges of social equity, health and wellness, and conservation – the three pillars of NRPA. Reaching out to underserved populations, encouraging active healthy lifestyles, and promoting natural resource protection, Cary models these beliefs through the programs and services provided each and every day. Our programs re ect the diversity of our population. Simply put, this is the highest honor a community can receive in this eld. While the award is granted by the NRPA, it is truly a recognition of the efforts of the entire community and organization. This award belongs to the entire Cary community.
