SPECIAL EVENTS REGISTER ONLINE: classweb.townofcary.org PART ONE 5 Martin Luther King, Jr. DREAMFEST 2017 January 14–16 Each year, we recognize and celebrate the life, work, and vision of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This year's DREAMFEST is a partnership between the Town of Cary Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources Department and the Town's Spruce Program. The theme for 2017 is Empowerment through Language and Literacy, which is explored in the following programs. DREAMFEST: TELLEBRATION Saturday, January 14 | 9 a.m. | Free Page-Walker Arts & History Center Tellebration brings together two talented, award- winning African-American storytellers, Willa Brigham and Donna Washington, and inspiring author Johnny Lee Moore for a morning designed to engage children in learning more about Dr. King and his teachings through the art of storytelling. DREAMFEST: DIVERSITY SUMMIT Saturday, January 14 | 9 a.m.–3 p.m. | Free Cary Arts Center Join us for a day of reflection and discussion with leaders in our community on the topics of cultural awareness and sensitivity, and the needs and challenges of building a diverse and inclusive community for all. DREAMFEST: POETRY FEST Saturday, January 14 | 7 p.m. | Free The Cary Theater In the tradition of the civil rights movement and Dr. King's call to writers to bear witness to social injustice, the Poetry Fest invites area poets to join in. The event will be moderated by poet and cultural historian Darrell Stover. DREAMFEST: MAYA ANGELOU: AND STILL I RISE Sunday, January 15 | 2 p.m. | $5 The Cary Theater And Still I Rise is the first feature documentary created about the remarkable writer, poet, actress, activist Maya Angelou. DREAMFEST: DAY OF SERVICE Monday, January 16 | 10 a.m.–noon | 100735 Monday, January 16 | 2–4 p.m. | 100736 All ages | Free Middle Creek Community Center The MLK, Jr. Day of Service is a great way to give back to your community. Volunteers will be doing a variety of hands-on tasks to help maintain and beautify the area around Middle Creek Community Center. Be prepared to get dirty! Coordinated by the Town of Cary Spruce program. Volunteers ages 15 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Registration required. STORYTELLER DONNA WASHINGTON
