15 Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources Nature Education Hemlock Nature Quest (age 13–15) If you think your child has seen everywhere at Hemlock Bluffs, think again! These programs journey to far corners of the preserve on a quest to fi nd nature rarely seen. Dress for the weather and off-trail conditions. Bring your sense of adventure! (HNQ participants are eligible to volunteer as program assistants for our younger nature programs.) Fees: $12(R) $16(N) (1 class) WINTER WILDLIFE SURVEY Join us for our annual check of the wetlands and nest boxes as we search for our resident winter wildlife. 101396 Sat Jan 28 2–4 p.m. SWIFT CREEK STROLL Stroll down the creek as we look for fi sh, turtles, salamanders, and more. Equipment provided. 101397 Sat May 20 2–4 p.m. Outdoor Recreation Boating After School Open Boating (age 11–17) Boat rentals will open just for youth to enjoy and take a boat out by themselves. Canoes, kayaks, and pedal boats will be available during this time. Sail boats are available to individuals who have taken sailing classes here. Safety instruction and supervision will be provided. There is no charge to fi sh from shore. All North Carolina fi shing regulations apply. North Carolina requires anyone 16 or older to have a fi shing license. After School Fishing (age 11–17) Learn the basics of freshwater fi shing. Angling for bass, bluegills, catfi sh, and carp, as well as cleaning and cooking your catch are discussed. You will learn the proper way to bait hooks using a variety of bait and the basics of casting fl y rods, close-faced reels, and cane poles. Bring your own rod/reel or use provided equipment while supplies last. Location: Fred G. Nature Education and Outdoor Recreation classes may involve traveling over rough or uneven terrain. To help prevent injuries, closed-toed footwear is required.
