Crossing improvements play a cri cal role in connected bikeway and pedestrian networks. Many neighborhood bikeways in par cular are located along lower-traffic routes parallel to primary roadways that cross mul ple thoroughfares with or without traffic signals. Contextually-appropriate pedestrian crossing accommoda ons are also important to create a comfortable crossing experience and enhance pedestrian safety. Improvements at these loca ons are therefore the cri cal link in crea ng low-stress and comfortable networks of pedestrian infrastructure and bikeways. A set of possible intersec on treatment op ons are provided in the Technical Appendix. Each crossing improvement must be evaluated and specific treatments selected based on localized condi ons and the crossing's role in the transporta on network. Successful wayfinding orients people to their surroundings and informs them on how to best navigate to their des na on along preferred pedestrian and bicycle routes. Both wayfinding signage and bicycle and pedestrian user maps help to familiarize new users with the network.
