EASTERN CARY GATEWAY SPECIAL PLANNING AREA Foster Development of a Compact Mixed-Use and High Density Destination Center; Improve the Visual Experience of Gateway Corridors How We Will Achieve Our Vision 1 Major Actions: • As proposals for major developments arise, explore opportuni es for public/private infrastructure investments or other Town par cipa on for the following projects: Explore Poten al Prospects for Expanding WakeMed Soccer Park into a Tier-1 Soccer Facility The Town will consider partnering with the Soccer Campus tenant to inves gate how public ac on can dovetail with private investment to grow the impact of WakeMed Soccer Park on Eastern Cary Gateway and the Town as a whole. A first er soccer club maximizes the number of visitors coming to the Town on game days. Park improvements will need to be coordinated with a strategy for dealing with the expira on of the lease of the land. Strong connec ons between WakeMed Soccer Park and various mixed use areas surrounding it can improve the value of both park and districts. By tying into future development to the south, there are opportuni es to extend the experience of visitors and to provide a unique amenity for a vibrant work space. There are opportuni es to connect to the north and west of the park as well. Given the greater traffic, improved ingress and egress from the site is essen al for the success of both the park and the surrounding areas. Bus lanes, pedestrian trails and crossings, and the opportunity for shu le routes could help meet this need. Support the Development of Area 2 East of Trinity Road With the current proposed alignment of Trinity Road comes the reality that the land available for development in Area 2: Office Campus, between I-40 and the future Trinity Road, may be limited. The Town will consider adjustments to the Trinity Road alignment to provide for more land for future employment development, and will consider public-private partnership efforts with landowners in and adjacent to Area 2 to address this challenge. Support a New Connec on Across Cary Towne Boulevard Cri cal to the success of Eastern Cary Gateway is crea ng a more connected network that can allow users of different modes of travel to move safely and conveniently between des na ons. A new connec on across Cary Towne Boulevard is an essen al part of this network. The Towne can provide assistance by working with property owners to iden fy the best solu on for crea ng a connec on across Cary Towne Boulevard, preferably connec ng the state-owned property in Area 1 and the exis ng Cary Towne Center property in Area 6. This includes the accommoda on of a stand-alone bridge crossing Cary Towne Boulevard exclusively for use by pedestrians and bicyclists. Study the Redevelopment Poten al of the WPTF Site The Town will consider partnering with the property owner to study the feasibility, in terms of costs and historic preserva on impacts, of redeveloping the WPTF radio site in the northwest corner of Eastern Cary Gateway. Notwithstanding the historic significance of WPTF facility, the transmi er building and towers sit on what could be prime land for redevelopment as this part of Town con nues to grow and as transit plans move forward that connect Raleigh and Cary more closely through a corridor near this area. Support the Expansion of the Triangle Aqua c Center The Town will consider partnering with the Triangle Aqua c Center (TAC) to support the expansion of the center to include a new diving facility and future pools to expand TAC offerings. 133
