DOWNTOWN CARY SPECIAL PLANNING AREA Approximately 50 structures were included in the Downtown Cary Na onal Register Historic District when it was created in 2001. While Na onal Register designa on is an honor and provides acknowledgment of historic proper es, designa on does not prohibit demoli on or redevelopment. Since 2001, three contribu ng historic houses in the district, along with their historic outbuildings, have been demolished. Widening Chapel Hill Road The current Comprehensive Transporta on Plan for Cary includes the widening of Chapel Hill Road from Maynard Road Northwest to Maynard Road Northeast to a four-lane median divided road. The purpose of this road widening project is to maintain levels of service over me as traffic conges on is expected to increase. While this road improvement is deemed necessary to handle future traffic, it could effec vely "shrink" the downtown to areas south of Chapel Hill Road, and reduce the northern neighborhoods' accessibility to downtown. Design solu ons are needed to counteract this effect. Planning, Regulation and Design Guidance for Downtown Policies, regula ons, and design guidelines shape the exis ng development landscape in downtown.
