Wastewater Treatment - Annual Nitrogen Removal Performance The North and South Cary Water Reclamation Facilities return treated wastewater to the Neuse River Basin and the Western Wake Regional Water Reclamation Facility returns treated water to the Cape Fear River Basin. The facilities have annual nitrogen limits on the pounds of nitrogen they are allowed to discharge or return to the receiving stream, as shown by limits on the graph below. Removing nutrients is important because high levels of nutrients in a water body can adversely impact water quality. All three wastewater treatment facilities in Cary consistently treat to reduce nitrogen levels to well below their annual permitted allotment.
