SPECIAL EVENTS 14 REGISTER ONLINE: classweb.townofcary.org PART ONE Elks Hoop Shoot Thursday, December 7 | 6:30-9:30 p.m. Bond Park Community Center Co-sponsored with the Raleigh Elks Lodge #735, this free- throw contest is for boys and girls ages 8–13. Winners qualify for subsequent competitions leading to a National Championship. National Champions' names are enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame. Proof of age required and age is determined as of April 1, 2018. Pre-registration required by 5 p.m. on December 7. Registrants must check in no later than 30 minutes prior to their age group's scheduled shoot time. A potluck lunch followed by special entertainment awaits us all! Bring a dish to share. For those wishing to participate in the gift exchange, please bring a wrapped gift. Grinch Candy Cane Hunt Saturday, December 9 | 1–2 p.m. | Age 6–12 | $10 Fred G. Bond Metro Park, Kiwanis Shelter The Grinch discovered that elves have hidden red and white candy canes along with some specialty canes at one of their favorite places: Bond Park! The Grinch is planning to find all of Santa's candy canes and turn them green. Come help find all the candy canes hidden in the park. Pre-register required by December 1 using course code 103713. Arbolito de la Esperanza: Tree of Hope Lighting Saturday, December 9 | 6–8 p.m. | Free Herbert C. Young Community Center The lighting of the Arbolito de la Esperanza (Tree of Hope) kicks off the Estrella de la Esperanza (Star of Hope) campaign, which collects food, toys, and money for families in need. The tree lighting is preceded by a traditional celebration with a potluck dinner of holiday foods from around Latin America. Local musicians perform and lead the audience in singing traditional holiday songs. Co-sponsored by Diamante, Inc. and the Town of Cary. Holiday Tea Wednesday, December 13 | 2–4 p.m. | Age 55 & Up | $10 Cary Senior Center, Ballroom Join old friends or make new ones as you enjoy savory and sweet delights at our wonderful winter tea. Enjoy music, dreidel, and a tasty treat! 22nd Annual Cary Kwanzaa Celebration Friday, December 29 | 11 a.m.—5 p.m. | Free Cary Arts Center Don't miss the 22nd Annual Cary Kwanzaa Celebration! Cary Kwanzaa is a communal, cultural celebration that honors African-American people and their heritage. During Kwanzaa, people are invited to ponder the Nguzo Saba, seven powerful principles derived from African heritage, as a means of taking stock, celebrating achievements, and entering the future refreshed and renewed. The Cary Kwanzaa Celebration is produced by the Town of Cary in partnership with the Ujima Group.
