THE TOWN OF CARY OPERATES THREE WATER RECLAMATION FACILITIES THAT SERVE CARY, MORRISVILLE, APEX, RDU AIRPORT AND WAKE COUNTY PORTIONS OF THE RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK. TO PROTECT PUBLIC HEALTH, OUR ENVIRONMENT, AND WATERWAYS, THE RECLAMATION FACILITIES TREAT WASTEWATER AND PRODUCE RECLAIMED WATER AND BIOSOLIDS FOR REUSE. THE TREATMENT PROCESS IS CONTINUOUS AND WITHIN ABOUT 24 HOURS FULLY TREATED WASTEWATER IS RETURNED TO A STREAM. FILTER Water from the clarifier enters a filter which further removes very small particles. ULTRAVIOLET DISINFECTION Filtered water passes through an intense ultraviolet light that disinfects the water. AERATION Disinfected water cascades down a step structure which adds oxygen to the water and is important for aquatic life that live in the receiving stream. RECLAIMED WATER Some of the highly treated wastewater is further disinfected with chlorine and is reused in our reclaimed water service areas for landscape irrigation, toilet flushing, commercial cooling towers and onsite at the water reclamation facility. STREAM Fully treated wastewater meeting and exceeding federal and state permit limits is safely reintroduced into the environment.
