SONGS OF THE DREAM: Kids Sing & Learn Saturday, January 13 | 10 a.m. Cary Arts Center Learn the songs that animated the struggle for equality in this family-friendly sing along. And, enjoy hands–on arts & craft activities that illustrates this moment in history. KIds may be invited to showcase the songs at the evening cultural performance. COMMUNITY & THE DREAM: Racial Taboo, a film by Brian Grimm Saturday, January 13 | 1 p.m. Cary Arts Center Racial Taboo is a documentary film that looks at our history using candid interviews and comedy. It serves as a catalyst for open, respectful, ongoing conversations between people of different races. Following the film, enjoy snacks, participate in group discussions, and debrief with film producer Brian Grimm. Hosted by Racial Harmony, a local group forming friendships to learn and grow together. MUSIC & THE DREAM: We Shall Overcome Saturday, January 13 | 7:30 p.m. Cary Arts Center Join us for the exciting world premier of Jazz Composer Harold Mims' We Shall Overcome, created especially for the 2018 MLK, Jr. DREAMFEST. The Triangle Jazz Band, led by jazz drummer Kobie Watkins, will perform this special composition, along with featured saxophone soloist Dr. Ron Carter. Also enjoy songs led by Songs of the Dream participants and other youth voices. JUSTICE & THE DREAM: 13th, a film by Ava DuVernay Sunday, January 14 | 3 p.m. The Cary Theater This award-winning film provides an in-depth look at the prison system in the U.S. and its relationship to the nation's history of racial inequality. Following the film, enjoy featured guest NC State faculty member Dr. Thomas Easley, a recognized authority on mass incarceration. SERVICE & THE DREAM: MLK Day of Service Monday, January 15 Shift A | 10 a.m.-noon Shift B | 2–4 p.m. Good Hope Farm, 1580 Morrisville Carpenter Road Take time to give back to your community, by helping prepare the soil of our new 20-acre urban agriculture and historic site. Be prepared to get dirty! Coordinated by the Town of Cary Spruce program. Volunteers age 15 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is required.
