VISUAL ARTS PART TWO REGISTER ONLINE: classweb.townofcary.org 35 Metals & Jewelry Beginning Metals & Jewelry (age 16 & up) Learn basic metalsmithing techniques to create jewelry and small objects/sculptures. Silver soldering, sawing, forging, finishing, and surface embellishments are just some of the techniques covered. Using sheet metal and wire, students will have an opportunity to create projects of their own. Supplies can be purchased at the Cary Arts Center. Instructor: Linda Simpson Fees: $135(R) $165(N) (6 classes) 114042 Tue Jun 12–Jul 17 6:30–9:30 p.m. Setting the Stone (age 16 & up) Learn multiple setting techniques to incorporate cabochons and faceted gemstones in jewelry designs. Variations of bezel settings, flush setting (gypsy), and prong or basket setting will be covered. Students should bring 3mm and 8mm round faceted stones plus a cabochon. Students should have completed an intermediate metals class or an orientation. Instructor: David Tomlin Fees: $108(R) $138(N) (6 classes) 114041 Mon Jun 18–Jul 30 6:30–9:30 p.m. (no class July 2) Charming Enamel (age 14 & up) This introductory enameling class is for beginners who want to learn the steps of enameling. Students will learn the techniques of applying enamel to small precut copper shapes to create a colorful and unique charm. Copper pieces are purchased from the Cary Art Center and all pieces are kiln fired during class. Instructor: Ginny O'Neal Fees: $30(R) $38(N) (2 classes) 114045 Mon, Tue Jul 2–3 4:30–6:30 p.m. Intro to Lapidary—Cabochons (age 16 & up) Learn basic skills to plan, select material, use machines and tools to cut, shape, and polish semiprecious and precious gemstones. Students will create cabochons in variations of shapes for use in jewelry designs. Tools are provided for use. Metals and stones are available for purchase through the Cary Arts Center. Successful completion of a Beginning Glass class qualifies students to purchase a Glass Studio Card to access the studio and use the equipment to work on individual projects.
