9 A GUIDE FOR WORKING WITH THE TOWN OF CARY the community. To that end, the Town of Cary does not tolerate harassment of employees, nor do we tolerate harassment of employees by nonemployees, including customers, visitors, independent contractors, and employees of temporary services. Harassment of nonemployees by employees will also not be tolerated, and we will not accept retaliation against employees and nonemployees who report instances of perceived harassment or who participate in any investigation of reported harassment. H A R A S S M E N T At the Town of Cary, we define harassment as verbal or physical conduct that belittles or shows hostility or aversion toward an individual because of his or her race, color, religion, gender, national origin, age, or disability; or that of his or her relatives or associates. Harassing conduct includes, but is not limited to, the taking part in or dissemination of harmful verbal, physical, or visual material placed on walls, bulletin boards, or circulated elsewhere on Town premises, property, or in the workplace. This also includes sexual harassment and discrimination as outlined in Chapter 2, Article III of Cary's Code of Ordinances, as well as Standard Procedure 48: Harassment/Sexual Harassment. The bottom line is that we have the right to maintain a professional environment free from disruption and disharmony. Be assured that when conduct has the potential to disrupt that professional atmosphere, the Town will take immediate and appropriate steps to investigate and curtail it.
