MOVE Providing Transportation Choices 33 C A RY, N O RT H C A R O L I N A F Y 2 0 25 4 T H Q U A R T E R R E P O R T V I S I O N Z E R O April brought about an important milestone for safer mobility in Cary. Council adopted a resolution declaring that Cary endorses Vision Zero as a strategy to reduce traffic deaths and serious injuries within the community's transportation network. This commitment highlights the continuing evolution of the policies established in the Imagine Cary Community Plan, specifically to ensure safety for all users and modes. Vision Zero is an internationally recognized, public health-based strategy to reduce traffic deaths and serious injuries through the implementation of the Safe System Approach. It considers all elements of the transportation system that impact crash survivability and guides improvements to reduce severity. Cary's endorsement of this strategy supplements past and continuing efforts to focus investments on multimodal infrastructure, traffic calming, and improving intersection safety. Adoption of this resolution aligns Cary with the regional metropolitan planning organization, Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization, which adopted a similar, systems-based safety action plan, the Blueprint for Safety, in June. B L AC K C R E E K G R E E N WAY R E N OVAT I O N S Cary installed five pedestrian bridges this quarter as part of Phase 1 of renovations to the Black Creek Greenway from West Dynasty Drive to Livingstone Drive. This segment is expected to be open this summer. As part of this renovation project, the 25-year-old greenway is being widened to Cary's current standard and the trail realigned to eliminate some of the sharper curves, improve drainage, and relocate sections away from flood-prone areas where possible. The Black Creek Greenway renovations are taking place in three phases to help minimize impacts on greenway users. Work along the greenway will continue during Phase 2, which will focus on Livingstone Drive north to Weston Parkway and is expected to reopen in 2026. Concurrently, work is being completed to fill a sidewalk gap along Cary Parkway over Black Creek, with the installation of a pedestrian bridge anticipated this summer.
