Sidewalks along Weldon Ridge Boulevard from Alden Bridge Drive to Cary Glen Boulevard and West Lake Road from Optimist Farm Road to Piney Branch Drive are substantially complete with the installation of new pavement markings, minor asphalt repairs, and new pedestrian warning signs remaining. Work along Optimist Farm Road from Glade Hill Drive to West Lake Road is about 60% complete. Underground storm drainage systems have been installed, with new curbs, gutters, and sidewalks to follow. Construction of the following projects is scheduled to begin later this year and to be completed by next summer: ■ Pittard Sears Road from the American Tobacco Trail to McConnell Lane ■ Penny Road from Kildaire Farm Road to Magnolia Woods Drive ■ Southeast Cary Parkway from Tryon Road to Lochmere Drive Cary selected these sites, distributed throughout the community, for their ability to close sidewalk gaps, improve accessibility, and promote walkability. All projects are funded through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). H I G G I N S G R E E N WAY P H AS E I I I Cary completed Phase III of the Higgins Greenway, a key milestone that extends the popular greenway corridor from Union Street to Kildaire Farm Road. Funded in part by a $3.3 million federal Local Administered Projects Program, or LAPP, grant, the project broke ground in April 2024. This new segment creates a continuous eastward path from Phase II, passing notable community landmarks, such as St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Cary Presbyterian Church, and historic Hillcrest Cemetery, and ultimately connects to the sidewalk along Kildaire Farm Road near Cary Elementary School. By completing this critical gap in the Higgins Greenway corridor, this project significantly enhances bicycle and pedestrian access to key community assets, including Cary Elementary, Cary Regional Library, and Downtown Cary Park. The extended greenway reinforces Cary's commitment to a connected, walkable community and encourages wellness, sustainability, and outdoor recreation.
