3 FILM, VIDEO, PHOTOGRAPHY GUIDE APPLYING THIS GUIDE Welcome to Cary, and thank you for selecting us as the site for your production. Through this guide, we seek to address the potential community impact of your production, regardless of its purpose or proposed use (see Production Classifications). It is irrelevant to the Town of Cary ("Cary") whether a production is commercial in nature or not-for-profit; what matters is if and how our residents' daily lives might be affected by the associated activities. Therefore, for the purpose of this guide, "production" may include any film, video, or photographic activity based on community impact and without regard to whether a production is commercial, educational, or professional. In short, the lower the impact, the less involvement with Cary. No Cary-issued permit is required to film; however, county or state regulations may apply. You must obtain permission if your project requires exclusive use of our buildings, roads, sidewalks, parks, and/or greenways. Other fees may apply depending on the facility, impact, and/or your need for staff support. 1. Before contacting Cary and requesting approval, please read this guide to determine your project's community impact. 2. If you determine your project will have associated community impact, send an email outlining the prospective date, time, location, and some brief details about your project to Marketing & Creative Manager Kristy Buchanan at kristy.buchanan@carync.gov. This allows us to contact you regarding your request and determine impact. Submitting an email request does not guarantee that your production will be approved. EXEMPTIONS: This guide does not apply to bona fide news media coverage or breaking news, entertainment, sports, or other special events. Individual recordings or still photography with no community impact are also exempt, meaning the required equipment is no more extensive than a camera and a single tripod. An example of no community impact includes family portraits as long as the number of individuals involved does not impede foot traffic or prevent other visitors from enjoying the public space. Projects that align with these specifications are exempt; you do not need to contact us for permission.
