Rescue Calls by Month
During the first quarter, rescue frequency increased
34.48% in 2016 as compared to the same period in
2015. The Fire Department responded to 43 rescue
incidents. One incident in particular involved a
vehicle crash that occurred on I-540 during the
morning of March 31, 2016. Staff responded, with
Morrisville and Apex Fire Departments, to a vehicle
that struck an overpass wall and was projected off
the overpass into a creek below. Three victims were
trapped in the crash. Two of the three were
extricated within 40 minutes and the third was freed
at the 47-minute mark. A Cary Firefighter held the
third victim's head out of the creek during the event,
preventing the victim from drowning.
The community outreach efforts by the
Fire Department in the first quarter
totaled 36 events, translating to almost
900 contacts. This effort was the result
of approximately 175 hours of staff
time. The public was provided the
opportunity to assess the outreach
efforts by filling out a survey. The
responses are in the chart.
