The State awarded Cary an increased water allocation from Jordan Lake based on our anticipated needs through 2045, ensuring an adequate water supply to our community. 2 0 2 0 W A T E R Q U A L I T Y R E P O R T 3 READINESS FOR EMERGENCIES We have extensive protections in place to ensure continued operations during freezing temperatures and winter power outages. Water mains are buried below the frost line or at a depth providing at least 30 inches of cover, whichever is greater. Exposed chemical feed or other piping is protected with heat trace cable. At our raw water pumping facility at Jordan Lake, we have 5,000-HP in dedicated standby power generation to support our ability to pump water from Jordan Lake to the water treatment facility. Additionally, we have 6,500-HP of dedicated standby power generation to run all unit processes at the treatment facility and most importantly, to pump high quality, treated drinking water through a vast network of water lines and storage tanks. WATER SYSTEM RESILIENCY Cary is committed to delivering safe, reliable, high-quality water to support our community. Here are some ways Cary enhanced water system resiliency in 2020. WATER SUPPLY INTERCONNECTS WITH NEIGHBORING UTILITIES Cary has a long history of progressively partnering with our neighbors to be prepared for the future. Recent collaborations have involved developing a regional hydraulic model that includes interconnections between the systems. This effort has helped to determine both current and potential transfer capacities which will allow for increased flexibility and reliability of local water supplies during droughts or other emergencies. Cary has interconnections with Apex, Holly Springs, Raleigh, and Durham, and the partnership network reaches as far as Johnston County to the east and Hillsborough to the west. DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM INFRASTRUCTURE Cary invests millions of dollars each year to upgrade aging or underperforming piping and valves. We utilize an asset management plan to focus attention and resources efficiently on the condition of these assets and replace them as needed.
