The Cary/Apex Water Treatment Facility was certified as a Director's Award facility by the Partnership for Safe Drinking Water for the 12th consecutive year. The Partnership is a national volunteer initiative developed by the EPA and other U.S. drinking water organizations representing water suppliers striving to provide their communities with drinking water quality that surpasses Federal standards. The Director's Award is presented annually to water systems that have completed a successful Partnership-led peer review of their self-assessment and improvements program and a review of annual plant performance and water quality data. The Cary/Apex Water Treatment Facility is a charter member of the Partnership for Safe Water. Reclaimed water is a valuable resource produced from wastewater that is highly treated using not only a biological nutrient removal and filtration, but disinfection with ultra-violet light and sodium hypochlorite. Reclaimed water demand for the quarter averaged approximately 37.5 million gallons per month which was 2.7 million gallons per month less than the same period in 2015. The last quarter has experienced above average rainfall amounts greater than 8-inches above normal, which has contributed to the lower irrigation demand. DID YOU KNOW? Sanitary Sewer System Stats! 930 miles of pipeline 40 wastewater pump stations 25,400 manholes The wastewater collection system conveys more than 6.3 billion gallons per year or approximately 17.28 million gallons per day to the Town's three wastewater treatment facilities. During the 2015/2016 reporting period, Cary's wastewater collection system experienced a total of 10 overflow events representing an average of approximately 1 overflow per 100 miles of sewer lines. National data suggests municipalities have an average of 4.5 sewer overflows per 100 miles of sewer lines. Cary tops the list of Safest Cities for Drivers in a study conducted by Nerd Wallet!
